Enlarging the Mesh Size on Your Hay NetUpdated 2 hours ago

If you've ordered a hay net with a smaller mesh size than you actually need, for example, ordering 2cm/ 3/4" mesh when you were meant to order a 4cm/ 1 3/4", you don't need to necessarily purchase a replacement. You can enlarge the holes yourself by cutting selected strands.

That said, this isn't something we'd necessarily recommend as a first option. Hole size can suit you well right now and then feel wrong later, as things like the season, weather, or the type of hay you're feeding changes. So before you cut, it's worth thinking about whether a different mesh size might actually be the better option rather than adjusting the one you have.

Can I cut the holes in my hay net bigger?

Yes. We've had customers do this in the past, after ordering the wrong mesh size and only realising once they came to use it.

To do this safely:

• Cut through the centre of the strand, not right at the mesh intersection, so the surrounding knots stay secure. (See the diagram below)
• Seal each cut end using either a hot knife, or scissors followed by a quick pass of a lighter or candle flame. Wear leather gloves for safety, and only touch the netting once it's fully cooled.

Cutting through the middle of a strand rather than at an intersection gives a cleaner result and keeps the surrounding mesh intact.

Safety note: Always melt-seal synthetic netting in a well-ventilated area, and keep the flame brief, just enough to melt the fibres closed rather than burn them.
